The red queen by philippa gregory6/9/2023 The events depicted show the turncoat nature of people and the need to question the loyalty of everyone. Talking Points: This book truly captures the life style and emotional strife of royalty during the mid to late 1400's. A great book for those who enjoy historical fiction and not to be missed by Philippa Gregory's fans. In short I enjoyed this book a lot and couldn't put it down at times. I always love reading about strong women and the protagonist in this book is as tough and ruthless as they come. She maintains tension and keeps the plot moving. Once again, Philippa Gregory brings this era to life, creates wonderful characters and immerses the reader in vivid historical detail. There's very little overlap, however it's interesting to compare the few events that are covered in both books from the different woman's viewpoint. It covers roughly the same time period as The White Queen, but it's being told from the opposite point of view. This is a period in England's History that is marked with strife and civil unrest as the House of Lancaster and the House of York continuously plot, scheme and wage war against each other for the throne. The story is told from the perspective of Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII and grandmother of Henry VIII. This is the second book in the cousin's war trilogy.

Why mummy swears book6/8/2023 Obviously if you’re already a fan of the ‘Peter and Jane’ blog then you already know what you’ll be getting: rambunctious moppets, Gadget Twat, Judgy dog, and Wheeler-fucking-Dealers make their usual eleventy billion appearances, requiring lashings of wine and sneaked choccy biscuits. Why Mummy Swears is the second novel by mum-blogger Gill Sims, and is even better than the first. In combination with getting to know her father’s surprise new glamorous (and much younger) wife, and being forced to spend more time with her narcissistic mother, life isn’t cutting her much of a break. But this is only the beginning…Īfter being dragged to join the school’s PTA in the new term by an annoyingly kind-spirited neighbour, Mummy is stuck with organising the Christmas Fayre and pleasing all the overly disapproving parents. After frantically booking sports camps, child minder slots, not to mention time off work, Mummy is exhausted. It’s every parents’ nightmare – the start of the school holidays – and instead of sitting in the sun, reading a book over a cold, crisp glass of Pinot Grigio, Mummy has two bored moppets to attend to. The decision to review and my opinions are my own.*īlurb: Why Mummy Swears is the much anticipated new novel from Gill Sims, author of the hilarious Why Mummy Drinks and online sensation Peter and Jane. *I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley.

At times, he contemplates his responsibility to his race, and weighs it against his responsibility to himself. He does not know where he belongs in society, or how he should hone his musical skills. The narrator endeavors to understand, at a basic level, whether he is black or white. Johnson's text is an example of a "roman clef. Identity is at the ideological core of this novel. However, the book is based on the lives of people Johnson knew and from events in his own life. Though the title suggests otherwise, the book is not an autobiography but a novel. The Ex-Colored Man was forced to choose between embracing his black heritage and culture by expressing himself through the African-American musical genre ragtime, or by "passing" and living obscurely as a mediocre middle-class white man. "The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man" by James Weldon Johnson is the fictional telling of the story of a young biracial man, referred to only as the "Ex-Colored Man", living in post Reconstruction era America in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century.
